“It is not what you look at that matters, it is what you see.” — Henry David Thoreau

A personal field journal of birding, naturalist learning, and quiet stewardship.

Notice.

The Perch and the Path is my personal field journal. Here, I document birding, naturalist learning, and the quiet work of stewardship—not for recognition, but to notice, learn, and show up where it matters.

Do.

I get out in the field, in the community, and in conservation work. After a lifetime working in technology and problem-solving, and 21 years in the Air Force, I now volunteer with my local Audubon chapter and take part in land stewardship projects. What I share comes from showing up, noticing, and learning as I go.

Reflect.

Posts fall into two threads. The Perch is for birding and field observations. The Path reflects on learning, stewardship, and shared responsibility. Some days are quiet. Some are uncomfortable. All are part of the path I’m on.

Capture.

I’m not a photographer, but I carry a camera along the path. The images you see here are snapshots of moments that catch my attention — birds in the rain, fleeting light on the trail, or the quiet rhythm of a winter landscape. They are reminders of what I noticed, not trophies or artwork.

Return.

This site grows slowly, like the seasons. Read when you like, notice with me, and come back when curiosity calls.
